Gentamcin (CAS 1403-66-3) belongs to the group of aminoglycosides. Gentamincin has an antimicrobial functionality and consist of a polar organic base. Use of gentamicin antimicrobial has declined because of resistance, particularly in the older drugs, and problems with toxicity, but they still remain important in the treatment of serious gram-negative infections in animals. Gentamicin is a common source of antimicrobioal residue in food of animal origin and fruit trees.
Gentamicin is a critical antibiotic for the treatment of life-threatening infectious diseases, including neonatal and adult sepsis. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies these drugs as 'highly important' for treating serious human disease. The EPA currently prohibits the importation of fruits and vegetables from countries that use gentamicin as a pesticide on food crops (IDSA 2006).
